Last week in Shanghai, an official directive has yet put another cultural recollection spot in jeopardy. Swatow Books, a small newsstand in Foochow Road was required by the authority to shut down as it is “unruly built”. The reason might be preposterous to an unintiated outsider, but quite common for the natives.

If you came two decades before to Shanghai and wanted to have some street-smart advices on bookstores, Foochow Road, I’m sure, would be definitely on your top list. The place, like Charing Cross in London or Chung-King South Road in Taipei, gathered the most major culture outlets of the city. In its salad days, roaming around for books, stationaries and curios was not only recreation for citizens, but also typical activities at weekends for students and professors, as it was practically impossible to find the title elsewhere if you can’t position it here.

I used to be one of them in early 2000s, at the eve of the Internet age when there are still several years for e-commerce to prosper, grubbing for favoured books and magazines on this road in some of the finest places I think the city can provide. Shanghai used to be a major cosmoplis during the nationalist years when magazines like New Yorker and Times were everywhere to be found and films released parallelly at the same time with North America. Its openness was completely devastated after the communist takeover. For ideaology’s sake, strict control has long been posed by the authoirty on the publications from overseas ordinary people can get access. However, as a history lover my desire to read foreign magazines has prompted me to explore further possibilities.

但凡愛讀點書的人，看到書的感覺總和不愛讀書的人有些不一樣。這是怎樣一種魔力？一時還真說不上來。閉上眼睛仔細想想，是紙上文字銳利的邊緣，油墨的芬芳，抑或是書頁摩挲的窸窣？大概都有吧。

小時候對書籍的裝幀並不在意，只消飢渴地從書中汲取養分。長大以後卻對字體、封面、留白這些細節耿耿於懷。大陸市面上的書籍，大都泛泛，眼睛一亮者實在鳳毛麟角，而每每勾我魂魄的，基本都出自於寥寥可數的那幾位之手：呂敬人、陸智昌、朱贏椿，還有在台灣如雷貫耳的王志弘。他們的作品獨樹一幟，極具辨識度。最近在上海劉海粟美術館舉辦的「書藝問道——呂敬人書籍設計40年」展覽以及在衡山和集書店的講座帶我們從「改革開放」初期一路走來，歷數這位書籍設計大師的重要作品，窺看近40年來中國大陸書籍設計的變遷。

日本的小學教育

在我們的傳統印象裡，日常生活中的日本人總是彬彬有禮，為人著想。這種印象不光來自於各類新聞報導、電視劇、文學作品中，我們似乎也能從日本觀光回來的人們那裡得到印證。這種情感確實發自內心還是虛情假意暫且不論，你不得不承認至少表面上的那套禮儀還是讓你如沐春風，心曠神怡。據說日本人從小就被教育凡事要懂得感恩，體恤他人。我不禁好奇，日本孩子從小接受的是怎樣的教育？這種教育制度的淵源為何？最近有兩本書可一探究竟。

其中一本《日本國立小學365天》於去年出版，由在日本大學任翻譯科教師的中國人所撰。作者兒子小學的大部分時間都在北京度過，六年級的時候來日本入東京當地國立小學接受了一年的教育。日本的小學要求學生寫日記記錄生活，孩子母親在此期間也頗多感悟，因此將這些感悟和孩子的日記匯集成這一本書。另一本《教養與文明》，是在日本唸過碩士的中國人所作的研究而成。其實這本書初版於2012年，去年再版，打算有空看完再作介紹。最近我剛讀完從多抓魚上淘來的第一本書，下面是讀書時的一些筆記：

學校對家長的要求是很具體的，在學年初就會公佈整個學年的日程表，家長需要為子女購買學具、治裝等，規定細緻詳盡，還有上學的路線、各類活動的安排。防災帽是日本小學的一大特色。因為日本是災難頻發的國家，佩戴防災帽的要求不僅旨在從小樹立學生的防災意識，也確實堅固耐用，具有實際意義。每週有一日學校不提供午餐，學生各自帶來母親準備的便當在午餐室四人圍一桌共同用餐。班主任每天輪換不同餐桌與學生一起吃飯，這樣的形式保證了老師與學生間充分交流的機會。老師和學生更像是朋友，老師和學生共同成長。

開學之初老師便對學生說：**上學的目標是交100個朋友。**日本小學注重培養孩子的個性。**做得和別人一樣等於沒做，只有做到和別人不一樣才有可能得到認可。**這似乎和我們對日本的傳統認識有些不一樣吧？日本不是都要服從上級嗎？書中是這麼說的：「日本的集體意識是建立在個性的基礎之上的，追求在集體中發揮個性。」調皮的學生才風光，乖乖女按部就班沒有市場。

溫泉鎮巴斯

巴斯（Bath）是索姆塞特郡（Somerset）東北面的一座城市，距離埃克賽特不到兩個小時的火車，幾個禮拜前趁天氣大好我抽空去了一趟。

當火車快要開進巴斯溫泉站（Bath Spa）的時候，雖然周圍沒什麼老建築，不過遠遠地便能透過車窗望見當地有名的大教堂。車站位於整個城市的南部。因為當時車站正在翻修擴建，所以甫一出站便是雜亂的工地，沒留下什麼好印象。從火車站一直到城中還有一段距離，幸好不長，主要是新開發的商舖，其中雲集了各種可以想見的英國 High Street 品牌。我仔細觀察了一下，這些店舖的房子都是一種建築風格，偏黃的石質外立面，偶爾搭配羅馬柱式和窗花，後來才發現原來是為了和城中老建築保持一致的風格。巴斯城市不大，人口僅八萬多一點，大概稱之為「鎮」更合適吧。由於事先做了功課，我對幾個要參觀的景點都了然於胸。其實從南至北步行頂多半個小時，不過這半個小時可看的地方也是很多的。

巴斯作為旅遊城市和世界文化遺產，遊客絡繹不絕，城中有穿梭巴士來往於景點之間。巴士雖可省卻勞頓之苦，不過我還是以為步行是體驗這座城市的最佳方式。

I had a mixed feeling two days ago when finding one year had passed away since I came to England. As my house mates were about to leave, they reminded me of some tourist attractions in Exeter that I had no opportunity to pay a single visit in the past year. The unwitting lapse of time galvanized me into action.

Although unbeknown to most people in China, Exeter still bears its fame as an ideal city for British families to spend their weekends. As the capital of Devon County, Exeter is regarded to be a transfer stop for those who want to take a breath of the remote rocks and capes in the very southwest corner of Cornwall. Many people will go to see the renowned Exeter Cathedral located in the city centre as its main sight. The church has experienced a radical refurbishment during the past year when two big scaffolds were attached to the front gate, which partly prevented my visit in those months. Fortunately, the overhaul project was finally close to complete and I can take a detailed look at this magnificent building at length.

今日互聯網普及的速度之快，在幾十年以前是難以想像的。網上資源的流轉和豐富亦是不可想的，在網上可以迅速找到所有 1923 年以前出版的公有領域的書籍，而不費吹灰之力。這些書之所以免費，乃是基於國際版權公約之規定。那麼多書可供下載，何不利用起來呢？這樣就可以省下大把銀子去買網上沒有的新書了。長久以來，這些資料都只能在電腦熒幕上閱讀。這聽起來似乎還行，可真的讀起來，這種方式對眼睛傷害極大，身體的姿勢亦頗不適。因為現在一般的 LCD 液晶顯示器都會自發光，而這種顯示方式比起傳統印在紙上的墨水，對眼睛傷害更大。幸好技術發展日新月異，一種稱作 E-Ink 電子墨水的技術將幾年前的癡人說夢變成了實實在在的東西。

國際售書巨頭亞馬遜公司便眸準時機，生產出 Kindle 電子閱讀器與它全球最大的網路書店相連，讀者購書就在彈指一揮間，閱讀體驗亦與紙書相埒。我也是愛書之人，電腦裡又囤積了數以百計的掃描書，終於抵不住誘惑於年初入手一台大熒幕版的 Kindle DX Graphite，至今已讀了不下二十本書。

It is almost four months since my first step onto the British Isles before I compose this second article. Not because that I am reluctant to write something in English, however, the pressure of reading reams of mundane theories as well as the trivial affairs such as cooking and washing in daily life can be summarized as the mainspring. Being abroad for the first time, I am imposed by all these things that used to be the business of my parents. In addition, having lost the exhortation of my dear long-winded mother in old days, I always try to let my backbone survive after incessant tests of somnolence and laziness. Now I have the confidence to say that my father’s well-known prowess on cooking is not doomed to lose heir after his unfledged son was sent to experience the weathering of living on the other sphere of the earth for a while.

Selected a cheap but exquisite house as my residence here, I find my neighbor really nice and easy to get along with, partly due to our congenial interests and temperament. In last month, we have made sightseeing excursions to London and Bristle, enjoying a hilarious time there. In comparison with other classmates, I have travelled to far less places in England, let alone a long-expected journey to Scotland, which is chillingly cold especially in winter. The reason is quite simple, for I love to stay in tranquility. Piles of essays also slow down my pace for an outing. But I decide to visit more cities in the future. Anyway, the opportunity to travel abroad is scarce, thereby precious. The impression and knowledge I’ve accumulated through my experience here is sure to form a general first-hand feeling to indigenous people as well as the eclectic ambience to cultural diversity in western society.

七月徂暑，至其中旬業已實習三月有餘，終日奔忙，於最後數日在西班牙館頭頂酷日，盡吾餘力，然其時復有簽證之瑣務，故不免心生退意，以處理此等煩心雜事。

至八月，聞母單位組織家屬行桐廬，蓋答謝員工世博之勞頓。初因天氣燠熱，無心出遊，然曰此行若去，則有千元之額外補助，再者沿途可飽覽自然景物，舒暢心境，此乃一良機也。是以欣然應允。

桐廬縣為一古地，三國吳黃武四年始置縣城。地處富春江中上段，山草秀美。《與朱元思書》雲：「奇山異水，天下獨絕。」是之謂也。

縣郊有一喀斯特溶洞，其地鄉民美其名曰：「垂雲通天河」。吾一行端坐於一扁舟，當地一村婦蕩槳在後。初入嚴洞，頓覺陰涼暢快，空氣宜人，全然不若洞外之熱浪滾滾。復行數十尺，只見怪石嶙峋，逼仄頭頂。村婦將各種奇石一一道來，此云「仙人下凡」，彼則謂「靈猴採桃」。定睛一探，果栩栩如生，惟妙惟肖。而後駛入一開闊處，抬頭望之，宛若蒼山穹頂，直聳入天，頓悟通天河之由來也。洞內鐘乳石筍鱗次櫛比，不禁慨嘆造物主之鬼斧妙手。聞此地下暗河全長三四公里，世所罕有，旁人皆嘖嘖。

The sensational “Ten Jumps” of Foxconn employee has become a bustling motif after people’s dinner these days. The reason of a simple suicide case may be ascribed to emotional vacillation. However, the consecutive events of such kind can not just be subsumed glibly to the first category, but, as a matter of fact, a malaise towards the whole society caused by class polarization.

Unlike those nonchalant dignitaries, the status of an ordinary Chinese currently, especially those called “nongminggong” by citizens, usually with a derisive tone, is equal to helplessness as well as inferiority when confronted with an autocratic and unwieldy leviathan. Working thirteen hours a day in sordid conditions, most of them are suffering from not only physical devastation, but also mental torture. In my opinion, it is the diligent and docile disposition of most Chinese people that buffers the grievance from the low-rank under the taut ambiance. We can hardly imagine what the situation would be like if a same case is transplanted in other country.

Sometimes, psychological hurt can lead to more serious consequence than maim in a work accident and the former is usually fatal. The tragedy mentioned is the best exemplification. As a result, according to someone’s logic, they have no choice but to culminate their life. Meanwhile, religion proffers a shelter for other helpless as a recess for their psyche. Linking this event with what I have seen in the church several weeks before, I gradually come to know why there were so many youngsters beyond my previous imagination coming to the Mass in the interval of their busy life.

今年二月初因爲親戚結婚，故而去了紹興喝喜酒。費時不多，凡兩天。今日將一些照片貼出，以作留念。

我去紹興的那幾天，正好在下雨，在埋怨天公之時，發現雨中的紹興其實更有風味，便端起相機記錄下了紹興的每一處細微的角落。

我們先是游走在紹興一條不知名的小巷裡，此處有些集市和賣各種特產的小店鋪，雖然下雨，行人還是不少。

These days I was reading the last volume of a story series that have accompanied me for nearly a decade. Yesterday when finished and turned over the last page of the tome, I signed with a complex smile, one for my ultimate witness of Harry and his friends’ happy ending and the other for the termination with my further expect for the whole story. From 2002 to 2010, Harry Potter series is the children story that gives me the deepest impression and influence during my study life. Ten years have passed away; however, I still have a vivid memory of my initial connect with this legend initiated by J.K Rowling.

In a breezy and clear night, I entered a restaurant with my father, attending a dinner hold by his colleagues. The moon was round, shrouded with several nebulous clouds in the midair. That day I had a fine mood as the restaurant was situated on a road near my old house, which aroused much of my thoughts back to the happy old days in the lanes.

With exquisite spectacles, my father’s colleague, Mr. Shen, was a lanky young man with a tinge of genteel manner. Though having little word and anecdote shared with his companions in comparison with my father, who was quite gregarious and talkative, he was not restrained but quite penetrating. He bade us welcome. To my surprise, he brought a present for me as the first-meeting gift. It was a book as I spotted it, without any wrappings or decoration. However, I still liked it since reading was one of my hobbies in leisure times.

He told me, with a gentle voice, that he really recommended this book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, as it was the most popular in 2001 and remained the bestseller for several weeks in UK years before. Still an innocent boy at that time, I did not have a thorough concept that night when I first reached it. But as reading the story further, I was gradually mesmerized by the wonderful world that Mrs. Rowling had created and the little boy with round-framed glasses.

字體、裝幀及其它

前幾日回家，在一輛擁擠不堪的公交車里打瞌睡，恍惚間瞥見一個小區大門名稱，用的是一行工整的小楷字。在大街小巷的招牌字體中，雷同者甚眾，然而這種字體卻是不多見的。本人素來對字體有些興趣，因而對街頭的漢字較常人敏感一些。這種字體其實有些「館閣體」的味道，它是清代官方文件中流行起來的一種字體，它要求筆划寫得端正、工整，且烏黑發亮，許多人認為這是一種非常漂亮的字體，可惜如今能寫得一手館閣體的人已然鳳毛麟角了。

有時候走在街上，看見形形色色的店招和路牌，斑駁陸離，卻總有一種異樣的感覺。許多招牌並沒有經過精心的設計，就像之前在外國人面前鬧了大笑話的菜名翻譯一樣。這些翻譯錯誤百出，粗製濫造，明眼人一看便知道這是毫無外文基礎的店員自己拿著字典生搬硬套，或者用「谷歌翻譯」之類的在線翻譯軟體草草了事。將此拼湊之譯名示人，洋相真是出大了。招牌的設計亦是如此。往往一塊招牌，藍底白字或者其他刺眼的顏色，花花綠綠，毫無品味，加上沒有經過設計的隨意字體，視覺毒害不淺。然而卻偶爾有那麼些店主想冒充高雅，從滿眼é、ç中便可想象：看來英文馬上就要過時了。業者會用幾個他自以為大多數人都看不懂的法文來顯示這家店的檔次，可惜拼錯的幾率並不在少數，不過僥幸乏人識破。店招的文字無論是方塊字或者拉丁字母，在製作牌子時罕見設計者，三番五次直接採用Windows中自帶的字體，「中易宋體（SimSun）」、「黑體（SimHei）」，信手拈來，殊不知這些字體作為店招字體的拙劣。西文字體更甚，一般作為店招的西文字體，最好採用非襯線字體，就是類似Tahoma的字體，這種字體邊緣無裝飾，放大以後醒目、突出，而襯線字體如Times New Roman則較適合排印文章正文的文字，小號的字讀來也異常清晰。然而許多店招製作者並無此種知識，更有甚者甚至採用「中易宋體」設計欠當的西文部分，行距拉得不成比例，此乃致命傷也。

今日整理電腦文件夾，無意中翻出幾篇陳年舊稿。想想存在電腦中畢竟不太保險，所以乾脆貼出來，存照以誌。

無題

這天凌晨，肖克又像往常一樣把車子慢慢停穩，拖著疲倦的身子踱到了位於底樓的家門口。他耷拉著極困的眼皮，一隻手在口袋裡尋到了鑰匙開了門。

肖克是這座城市一家出租車公司的司機，平常開車可以碰到形形色色的乘客，和他們偶爾聊上幾句，查看人間百態，倒也算有趣。唯一的缺點就是疲勞，干這行要做一整天，然後休息一天再上路，生物鍾難免紊亂。

經過一整天的交通喧鬧，這一刻，他已經倒在那張屬於他自己的柔軟的床上了。他沒有鼾聲，只有那因為墜入夢鄉而從鼻翼里吐出的均勻的呼吸。

他住的小區里的居民大多和他一樣，是從城市其他角落被迫動遷過來的，原因很簡單——因為市政建設的需要。他們是第一批，和小白鼠無異，因為政策不成熟，所以根本沒有分到錢。還有一些本來就住在這里，只是他們失去了原本作為耕地的這塊地，所以人們稱呼他們為「征地農民」，這些人和許多動遷過來的人一樣，雜居在這里。他們倒有一個共同的特點：文化程度不高，城裡人卻更加因為他們的身份自以為是，常常整天高談闊論，搬弄是非。「鄉下人」倒不這樣，他們有他們自己的小圈子，從他們的生活習性可以看出：他們還保留著在居室周圍飼養動物的孓遺。

肖克喜歡讀書，看些各種方面的書，甚至有些冷僻。譬如一些研究這個國家疆域變化的書，一些音韻學方面的書，或者一些稗官野史。他從不和他們糾纏，在他眼裡，這些人既討厭，卻又有些可悲。他們應該受教育的最好時光都被大大小小的政治運動所擠佔了，留給他們的只有無知和乏味的晚年生活。但是他住在這里，又不得不每天和他們朝夕相處，鍛煉自己的忍耐力。

誰是野蠻人？

今天是三月十三號，明天那部片子據説就要下檔了。本來想跟風一下，去和平影都體驗一把，不料竟然拖到今天。這會兒看，已經不能叫做跟風了，因爲大家都跟瘋了，連票都難買到。好不容易有個機會在家附近，只是也不是巨幕的，罷了，能看就不錯了。

幸好它沒有讓我失望。整部片子雖然近三個鐘頭，已經超過希區柯克所說的好電影對觀衆膀胱忍耐力的限度了，不過仍是不忍轉睛（3D眼鏡看起來還是非常累的，我覺得畫面大概是有三層，最遠一層左右焦距和最近一層正好相反，中間一層沒有變化，以此來造成遠近不同的三維感覺）。即使身為人類，在看到納威人團結在一起，奮力抵抗“外星人”的入侵時，我還是在心中默默地祈禱，希望老天能夠幫幫他們。在人類發達的科技面前，納威人的武器遠不如前者那般具有大規模的殺傷力且又冰冷無情，看到他們一次又一次被人類殘酷的攻擊所打退，真是讓人悲憤交加。整部片子，大的看來，是人類自以爲是的“發展”對大自然的破壞。在科技日益發達的今天，又有多少人看到那是以犧牲環境為代價的呢？野蠻的推土機伴隨著伐木工毫無人性的摧殘，森林和動物不堪一擊。人類仿佛是勝利者，傲慢地踐踏著哺育自己的地球，殊不知其中的荒謬與悲哀。當今地球的負擔日益沉重，貪婪的人類在將來的某一天可能就會因爲資源枯竭，人口膨脹，土地稀缺而殖民其它星球，到時別人會不會遭殃，那還真是未知數。有時候真的不知道人之初，性善耶？抑或惡耶？或許是好壞參半吧。電影中總算是那位科學家團隊和主人公還心存良知，在做臥底的時候良心發現，反過來加入納威人的行列，誓死抵抗自己的同類。我想，那是因爲主人公和納威人具有共同的一樣東西，那就是“良心”。

One score and two dozen years ago, communist China was stuck in a calamity involving almost everybody from the citizens who had even menial jobs to party dignities. These decades, including the disastrous political movements one after another since 1949, has constituted the whole figure of the miserable childhood in most middle-aged peoples’ memories. Up to this day and age, although a multitude of fictions, stories and poems accusing this absurdity have seen their light of day, never a book can be more vivid in reminiscing a personal experience with first-person description than the autobiography of an elegant and dignified lady, Nien Cheng.

To be candid, I don’t have any knowledge about this woman, nor her book before hearing the recent news of her demise at the age of ninety-four, which is longevity in my eyes. Hardly had I been curious about the book when I finished reading a brief introduction of it as well as finding the noble and graceful portrait of the old lady on the cover. Instantly I decided to get this book to have a read. In my first thought, it is utterly impossible for me to buy this book in local bookstores selling foreign books as most of them are state-operated. As a matter of fact, the political air in contemporary China seems to be much tighter in comparison with that of twenty years ago. A same book of this kind is more likely to be published before 1989 than today. Looking to a fish out of the net, I tried to search it on my university’s library because there are tons of foreign volumes and references.
